What does the Welcome Centre Do?

The Welcome Centre provides emergency packs for people referred to us who are in crisis need. The following packs are available: food packs (for single people, couples and families), toiletry packs and Home Starter packs (small kitchen items for young people aged 16-25 years). Sleeping bags and blankets are also usually available. The food and toiletry packs contain sufficient for two to three days.

We also provide a sign-posting and information service. This is available to all clients, who can be directed to organisations which can help with special needs, after discussion with the Project Manager.

Who do we help?

People in crisis need, for example people who are homeless, fleeing violence, have mental health, drug or alcohol problems, are refugees or asylum seekers, families struggling with debt and young vulnerable people. In fact we are here to help anyone who needs crisis support. (Please note that we do not provide cash help).

How do they contact us?

Everyone using the Centre must be referred by a recognised agency. A prior telephone referral must be made before clients can be directed to the Centre. Please ring the Project Manager on (01484) 340034 during our opening hours to make a referral.

Who supports us and how can you help?

In order to continue to provide our services we welcome donations of food, toiletries, small household items, sleeping bags and blankets. We always have a need for the following food items: tinned and dried food, teabags, sugar and long-life milk. Deodorant, shampoo and shower gel are also common shortage items.

Cash donations are always welcome at any time. Please make any cheques payable to `The Welcome Centre'. Gift Aid forms are also available as appropriate. You might like to consider becoming a `Friend of the Welcome Centre'. Friends help us by publicising the project, organising events to support us and volunteering their time to help (particularly at busy times like Harvest). If you wish to make a donation please forward your cheque to the Project Manager.

We are very grateful to all who support our work.

What are our plans for the future?

We have several exciting ideas for the development of the project, subject to obtaining funding. These include

  • Providing training sessions in order to help our clients develop new skills and increase their self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • Providing a more effective and inclusive service for people from different ethnic backgrounds.
  • Linking up with the coffee bar at the Mission to provide support to its customers.
  • Working more closely with our colleagues in the town centre, including churches and referring agencies, and extending our links with other organisations and support networks.
  • Increasing membership and participation in the project, including establishing the `Friends of the Welcome Centre'.
